School liaisons are assigned to the Fox, Windsor, Northwest, Grandview, Dunklin, Festus, Crystal City, Sunrise, Jefferson R-7, DeSoto, and Hillsboro school districts in Jefferson County; St. Pius X High School, St. John’s High School, and Our Lady elementary school in Jefferson County; Jefferson College in Jefferson County; and Mehlville School District in St. Louis County up to one day per week. Liaisons are in these schools: a) to triage and facilitate access of children and their families to community mental health services on site or through community vendors; and b) to provide each school district with training/education information in regard to psychiatric issues, violence prevention and substance abuse as desired. Some of the services that can be provided by or facilitated through the liaisons include:

  • Consultation with teachers, counselors or administrators regarding a particular child or issue.
  • Crisis/disaster counseling and facilitation of a crisis or disaster response by COMTREA staff in conjunction with the respective school.
  • Aftercare and continuing care of children who are seeing a counselor or psychiatrist (either COMTREA or other).
  • Initial evaluation and referral of individuals and or families to COMTREA counselors and/or psychiatrist or psychologist (liaison referrals are considered priority referrals).
  • Individual counseling and/or group counseling (with parental and school permission) as time allows.
  • Family consultation and evaluation.
  • Classroom presentations/staff/parental group presentations on these general topics or other related ones:
    • Substance Abuse
    • Domestic Abuse
    • Sexual Harassment
    • Family Life
    • Mental Illness
    • Love & Logic Training for Parents
    • Understanding Attention Deficit Disorder and Your Child
    • Anger and Conflict Management
    • Recognizing the Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Acute Stress Disorder in Children and Adolescents
    • Art Therapy – What Is It?
    • How Grief Affects Children and Adolescents
    • Multicultural Issues
    • Bullying

There are no fees for these 45-minute-to-one-hour presentations; however, they are provided based on staff availability. Extensive training and education for large groups of students or faculty members on these topics or others are available at a reasonable fee. One very popular program for students is on sexual harassment.
