What is Canine Therapy?

It’s been a terrible day.  You woke up late.  Your car got a flat tire. You spilled coffee on your pants. And that was all before 9:00 am.

Completely frustrated at the end of the day you open the door at home, and there is your dog. His whole body wiggles in excitement when you arrive and he immediately rolls over so you can rub his belly.  You can’t help but smile.  As you pet his fuzzy coat and feel his warmth, thoughts of flat tires and spilled coffee seem to just melt away.  The emotional transformation is what canine therapy is all about.

Apply the ability our own pets have to ease anxiety and stress, their ability to make us happy and comfort us to those patients in healthcare facilities and children in the classroom—you get magical results.

Therapy animals, like those who participate in the Tails with Tales Program, provide affection and comfort to the public, typically in facility settings such as hospitals, retirement homes, and schools. These pets have a special ability to interact with members of the public and enjoy doing it. Therapy animal owners volunteer their time to visit with their dog in the community.

A therapy animal has no special rights or public access except in those facilities where they are welcomed. They may not enter businesses with “no pets” policies or accompany their handler in the cabin of an airplane regardless of their therapy animal designation.

Our Program

Founded in 2016, Tails with Tales Canine Therapy Program is a volunteer program that involves people and their personal dogs.  After receiving proper training and certification, our teams are able to visit nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation units, day programs, special schools and many other types of facilities.

Therapy dogs come in many different shapes and sizes, mixed or purebred, young and old.  This program is not breed, size or gender specific. Canines chosen to participate in this program have outstanding temperament, stable personalities, advanced obedience skills and a strong love for people.  The canines are owned by their handlers who devote their time and energy to share their companions with the many people we visit.

Our Teams are focused on the emotional health of people in a wide variety of settings and can bring joy and comfort to those we serve.
