The Classroom Program

COMTREA-ECPP staff will implement the Incredible Years® Dina Dinosaur classroom program that uses dinosaur-themed materials and puppets to engage and teach children.  The program will strengthen children’s social and emotional competencies, such as understanding and communicating feelings, using effective problem-solving strategies, managing anger, practicing friendship and conversational skills, and behaving appropriately in the classroom.

Evidence-Based Practices and Assessments Used

Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional a highly reliable, parent-completed tool with a focus on children’s social and emotional development; it can quickly pinpoint behaviors of concern and identify any need for further assessment or ongoing monitoring.

Incredible Years®

The Incredible Years® is a series of interlocking, evidence-based programs supported by over 30 years of research. The programs are used worldwide in schools and mental health centers, and have been shown to work across cultures and socioeconomic groups.

Parenting Groups

COMTREA-ECPP staff will provide parent groups utilizing Incredible Years® curriculum focusing on strengthening parent-child interactions and attachment. Parents will learn how to improve school readiness skills and are encouraged to partner with teachers so they can develop children’s academic and social skills and emotional literacy. The parent class follows a similar schedule of objectives as the child’s classroom program to reinforce skills learned.  There are 3 possible Parent Groups:  Babies-Toddlers-Pre-School.

COMTREA Treatment Services

If need is identified through the ASQ-SE screening or referral, prevention, early intervention and treatment services may also be provided to children and their families.  These include in-home/on-site therapy, individual, family or group counseling and case management. One on one coaching with parents or caregivers using the Incredible Years curriculum is provided.  This enables parents/caregivers to support the children and can improve social-emotional development and school success.

Overall Goals and Outcomes

Parents caregivers, and school/daycare personnel should see an increase in positive peer relationships, self-control, self-monitoring, self-correction, and social-emotional health in the child.  Research shows that this will improve school readiness for all children.
