Susan Curfman, MA, President and CEO

Welcome to COMTREA and thank you for visiting our website.  COMTREA has a unique and compassionate history of serving the underserved in Jefferson County.  The concept for COMTREA began with three men in 1973 that were seeking an alternative to incarceration to treat individuals with mental illness and drug and alcohol misuse.  The absence of services and counseling services in Jefferson County led to the development of a non-for-profit agency that would build a halfway house, which was the most immediate need at that time.  These three individuals, Judge John Anderson, W.H.S. (Stu) O'Brien, a public defender, and the District Supervisor of State Probation and Parole, Melvin G. Williams, were the driving force that led to the creation of the Corporation on Jan. 22, 1973.  That Corporation would later take the legal name Community Treatment Incorporated, which was shortened to COMTREA, the first syllable of each word. Thus, COMTREA came into being. The first Executive Director selected to lead COMTREA was Dr. Stephen F. Huss, who went on to serve as the CEO and President of COMTREA from March 1973 until his retirement in January 2016. A legacy of 43 years that saw the expansion of COMTREA from the initial single site of the halfway house in 1973 to a comprehensive community health services provider that extends beyond Jefferson County to south St. Louis and other parts of the St. Louis Metro area. At current count, there are 17 different COMTREA locations that provide a full complement of mental health, physical health, dental care and counseling. There are a host of specialty services including safe housing for victims of domestic violence, children’s advocacy center, and canine therapy. I invite you to learn more of these programs by touring our website and following us on Facebook.

It is our firm belief as manifested in our mission statement that emotional and social problems, substance abuse, domestic violence, affordable physical and dental health care, and psychiatric illness are major concerns of today. COMTREA pledges to address these issues through seeking sufficient funding, outreach activities, training and education, and pursuit of excellence in clinical and quality outcomes.  It is not sufficient to be compassionate, one must act.  I am humbled by the legacy of COMTREA in fulfilling this expectation and look forward to our very bright future as we continue to serve in this capacity and collaborate with other agencies to meet the needs of the underserved and rural communities.  We are honored to be the safety net for Jefferson County.
