A Safe Place is a residential program that provides services to meet the immediate needs of women and their children who are victims of domestic abuse. Abuse may be physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, psychological, or it may take the form of the destruction of property or pets. Children who grow up in violent homes frequently learn violence as an acceptable means of resolving conflict or exerting control. These children are likely to become victims or abusers as adults. A Safe Place offers alternatives to the violent lifestyle of all forms of abuse and provides a comprehensive program for the battered woman and her family. Services include:
- Hotline for 24-hour crisis situations
- Emergency shelter program
- Residential shelter program
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Life skills groups
- Domestic abuse education groups
- Court advocacy
- Support groups
- Recreational activities
- Child play therapy
- Art therapy
Women learn to break the cycle of violence through individual counseling, support groups, education, comprehensive parenting and fitness and wellness programs. Feelings of dependency are replaced with self-sufficiency. Self-esteem, assertiveness, communication and decision-making skills are taught, and assistance with nutrition, budgeting, housing options, job searching and career planning is provided.
A Safe Place helps empower women and children to rise above the pain of domestic abuse and begin a new safer and healthier life. The shelter is supported by cash gifts, in-kind services such as volunteering time and services and donations of diapers, personal care items for youth and adults, school supplies, new clothing and toys. All donations to A Safe Place are tax deductable and donations of $100 or more are eligible for an additional 50% state tax credit. To learn more about these services, or to make a donation, call us at (636) 232-2301 or toll-free at 1-877-COMTREA (266-8732).
